Emerging Technologies Competition
The Emerging Technologies Competition is our annual innovation initiative, turning promising ideas into commercial reality.
The competition brings cutting edge science to the real world for the benefit of society. It aims to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative technologies in health and wellbeing, energy and environment, food and water, and materials.
Professional bodies & funders
Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh)
We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the GDCh during a joint symposium to celebrate their 150th anniversary year in 2017. Through this agreement, we partner to promote and enable the chemical sciences in Europe and in particular through support of the European Chemical Society, EuChemS.
Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)
We collaborate with IChemE on the interdisciplinary journal, Molecular Systems Design and Engineering.
The journal focuses on understanding molecular properties, behaviour and interactions, and how this can be applied to the design of processes, to solve global technological problems. It brings together selected disciplines in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computational and materials science.
The journal will help to shape and advance the field of molecular engineering for the future.
London Schools Excellence Fund
We were awarded £300,000 from the Mayor of London through the London Schools Excellence Fund, to support our Inspiring Chemistry Teachers programme.
This programme was aimed at developing the subject knowledge, skills and confidence of teachers who deliver chemistry lessons in London’s schools. This support for teachers resulted in a positive effect on pupil’s enjoyment, interest and achievement in chemistry.
National Science Academy (NSA)
The National Science Academy Grant Scheme has supported the Welsh activities of our outreach programme with a donation of £33,500. The SIAS programme provides students with demonstrations and access to spectrometers and analytical equipment.
The aim of our partnership is to increase the number of Welsh pupils studying chemistry at university and electing to follow a science-based career. We also aim to increase the participation of students from areas of low engagement with chemistry.
Newton Fund
We are participating in two programmes within the UK Government’s Newton Fund programme.
Through our operational alliance with the British Council, we’re one of the organisations involved in co-funding Newton Fund researcher links grants, which create new bilateral partnerships between the UK and scientifically developing countries through co-organised workshops.
In partnership with the Royal Society we are co-funding Newton Fund international researcher exchanges between scientists in the UK and Africa.
Royal Society
, which launched in September 2014, is an open access journal publishing research across the entire range of science, using objective peer review and without any restrictions on scope, length or impact. The journal comprises 12 subject sections, including chemistry.
As part of this collaboration we manage the editorial aspects up to acceptance, including editorial content development and peer-review, for articles published in the chemistry section of this journal.
We are delighted to be working with the Â鶹AV on our newest journal which we hope will benefit greatly from our joint brands. Royal Society Open Science is innovative in a number of ways and this collaboration with the Â鶹AV illustrates how closely aligned we are in our publishing philosophy.
Trusts & foundations
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)
With the support of SFI, we are expanding our current across Ireland. The support provides enhanced training and equipment to help to meet the high demand for SIAS visits.
The SIAS programme provides students with demonstrations and access to spectrometers and analytical equipment.
Wilkinson Charitable Trust
Our 'Inspire To Teach' programme is supported by a grant of £60,000 over three years from the Wilkinson Charitable Trust.
This programme aims to:
- reach and educate a wide audience of individuals about the merits of science teaching
- support newly qualified teachers by broadening their professional network, enabling them to identify with each other and seek out mentoring opportunities
- combine training, networking and celebration to maximise impact on the scholars
- result in more of the best students choosing to study chemistry at university.
Wolfson Foundation
During four years of support and a financial donation of £1m the Wolfson Foundation has made a substantial difference to the aspirations of thousands of talented and gifted students.
Through our Reach & Teach programme, this generous donation has enabled us to enhance the knowledge and skills of hundreds of chemistry teachers, through:
- development of continuous professional development courses
- providing thousands of students with enrichment and enhancement activities
- access to Chemistry at Work events and .
