Professor Luisa De Cola, Università degli Studi di Milano
Awarded for innovative studies on how photophysically active materials and nanostructures may be fabricated for deployment within active biological systems targeting future healthcare solutions, and for excellence in communication.
Luisa De Cola is a professor at the University of Milan and head of the Materials for Health Unit at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, IRCCS, Italy. She is also a visiting scientist at the IFG-KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany.
Professor De Cola was born in Messina, Italy, where she studied chemistry. After a postdoc in the USA, she was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna (1990). In 1998, she was appointed Full Professor at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. In 2004, she moved to the University of Muenster, Germany. In 2012, she was appointed Axa Chair of Supramolecular and Bio-Material Chemistry, at the University of Strasbourg. Among her awards are the ERC advanced grant (2010), the Izatt–Christensen Award in Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (2019), and the Gold Medal Natta (2020). She was Nominated Chevalier de la Légion d' Honneur by the then-President of France, François Hollande. She is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, of the Accademia dei Lincei and Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Luisa is editor in chief of Chemistry Europe.

Professor Nicholas Kotov, University of Michigan
Awarded for innovative studies and applications of complex self-assembling nanosystems, and for excellence in communication.
Nicholas A Kotov is Irving Langmuir Distinguished University Professor in Chemical Sciences at the University of Michigan. He is a pioneer in the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of complex systems from ‘imperfect’ nanoparticles. His current work focuses on chiral nanostructures, biomimetic nanocomposites from one- and two-dimensional materials, and graph theoretical representations.
Professor Kotov has received more than 60 awards and recognitions, including the UNESCO Medal, MRS Medal, and Chirality Medal. Together with his students, Nicholas founded several startups that commercialised self-assembled nanostructures for the energy, healthcare and automotive industries. Nicholas is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors. He is a committed advocate of scientists with disabilities – visible and invisible.

Professor Xiaogang Liu, National University of Singapore
Awarded for outstanding contributions to the understanding and optical manipulation of photon conversion in nanocrystals and their applications in X-ray and light-field imaging, and for excellence in communication.
Xiaogang Liu is Professor of Chemistry at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds a joint appointment with the N1 Institute for Health, the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, and the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research. He received his PhD from Northwestern University, Evanston, USA in 2004. He has more than 18 years of research experience in the field of lanthanide luminescence. His current research interests include optical nanomaterials and energy transfer. He explores the use of luminescent nanocrystals for photocatalysis, sensing, scintillation, imaging, and assistive technology.
